The girl took Jericho out into the East Side industrial wasteland. A street whose darkness was rarely troubled by headlights, or indeed by light of any kind. The moon merely bled down, as though impaled on unseen barbed wire across the burnt out night sky.
A few poky stores had lowered their window grates after a long day of gruffly dispensing Asian babes, Tacos and thrift wear. A derelict bus station had become a motel for foxes and shopping carts. Other than this, either side was a long, creaking cliff of warehouses.
Jericho had been thinking furiously as they rode. Now, as they unfolded from the bike and the darkness of the street closed in around them, Jericho blurted, “Give me something more. Something substantial. Before we go in.”
The girl motioned for quiet, then at the warehouse by them. She whispered, “Welcome to an empty warehouse. This empty warehouse is a kind of warehouse. This empty warehouse is kind of empty. What do you want from me?”
“This is their ‘headquarters’. What does that mean? They deal from here?”
“Pack here.”
“Pack.”
She waited for more. The girl shrugged.
Jericho scowled. “Well… I hope they don’t forget the sun screen. You mean they prepare their goods for distribution.”
The girl shrugged again. “Okay.”
“Okay? O… kay? That’s it?”
